Airbus highlights its presence in India's aviation marketplace

Airbus' key role in the Indian market is being underscored by its active participation at this week's India Aviation 2008 Air Show - the first such event dedicated to the country's civil aviation sector. An A380 has been brought to Hyderabad's Begumpet Airport for display at the four-day air show, along with a new A319 that is being delivered to Air India. India is a strategically important country for Airbus, and the company's presence in this market dates back 30 years with its first delivery of an A300B2 to Indian Airlines in 1974. Currently, Airbus has a market share of around 70 per cent of all commercial airliners sold in the market, and delivers approximately one aircraft per week to an Indian-based carrier. Airbus customers in the country include such leading airlines as Air India, GoAir, Indigo Airlines, Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and Simplifly Deccan. The backbone of Air India's airliner inventory is formed by Airbus aircraft, with this national carrier flying one of the largest A320 fleets in Asia - as well as being the largest single operator of A310 passenger aircraft in the world. Simplifly Deccan was India's first low cost airline to introduce the A320s in its fleet, while another Indian low cost carrier - Indigo Airlines - placed one of the largest single orders for A320s when it signed for 100 aircraft in 2006. Kingfisher Airlines was the first in India to order the A340, A350 and A380. Jet Airways became the market's initial airline to acquire the A330-200, and the new A330 freighter version has been ordered by India's Flyington Freighters. The Airbus vision for India's aviation sector is to support its growth in the most sustainable way possible, helping to create value and successful partnerships with local customers and companies. Manufacturing relationships with Indian companies began with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in 1988, when an agreement was signed to make the forward passenger doors for the A320. Today, HAL produces almost half of all these doors manufactured worldwide. Airbus' current industrial partnerships in India span engineering, information technology services, training, technical publications, research and technology, as well the manufacture of parts and sub-assemblies. In fact, Indian engineering companies - including more than 1,000 people from Bangalore - contribute to virtually all Airbus aircraft programmes. In addition, Airbus has been working with European suppliers to forge partnerships with Indian companies. In September 2006, Airbus announced several cooperative initiatives in India, two of which are fully owned Airbus subsidiaries: the Airbus Engineering Centre India (AECI), and Airbus Training India. AECI is a high-tech facility where Indian engineers are responsible for developing advanced capabilities in modelling and simulation, covering areas such as flight management systems and aerodynamics - which are critical factors in the design and production of high performance aircraft, including the A380 and the A350 XWB. This facility is expected to be involved in various Airbus aircraft products, and is expected to grow to almost 300 people in the next three years. Airbus Training Centre India offers immediate support to the Indian aviation sector by providing a new service free of charge to screen and evaluate pilot candidates selected by airlines to be type-rated on Airbus aircraft. Pilots who are selected undergo refresher or entry-level training courses. Airbus also is working with Canadian flight simulator company CAE to extend the facility's capabilities as a full-fledged pilot training centre which will be able to train up to 1,000 annually, as well as offering maintenance courses in state-of-the-art classrooms.

Airbus called on its partners and suppliers, as well as other key players in the Chinese aviation industry, to share its vision of a green aviation industry and to join in its efforts to make aviation an eco-efficient industry. The appeal was made at a conference on aviation eco-efficiency, which was held yesterday in Beijing. Addressing the China Eco-efficiency Conference, which was attended by Chinese government officials and representatives of airlines, Rainer Ohler, Airbus Senior Vice President Public Affairs and Communications, said that a green industry must be the vision for the future of aviation and joint efforts are needed to make aviation an eco-efficient industry - which means growing and creating value with less environmental impact. "There is not one simple solution but cross-industry and international cooperation are the way forward," Ohler said. "China has become an increasingly important player in the world aviation sector thanks to the country's continuous economic growth in the past decades." "I therefore would like to make a call to the key stakeholders of the air transport sector in China, including the government, partners and suppliers, to share our vision and to join in our efforts for an eco-efficient aviation. Doing so will help long-term sustainable growth of the industry and China's economy, to which the air transport sector is a strong and indispensable contributor, as well," Ohler added. Airbus' call received positive response from the government officials and airline executives present at the conference. "China attaches great importance to environmental issues and the government is enhancing the regulations over environmental protection, aiming to addressing the environmental concerns while keeping the momentum of economic growth," said Ms. Feng Yan, Deputy Division Chief of the Ministry of Environmental Protection. "We fully support Airbus' efforts and encourage Chinese aviation enterprises to contribute to an eco-efficient aviation industry." During the event, Ohler and Laurence Barron, Head of Airbus China, unveiled Airbus "green cotton bags," which will be given to the public for free.

AirAsia X orders 10 additional Airbus A330 aircraft

AirAsia X, the new long-haul low cost-carrier within the AirAsia Group, has signed a firm contract for an additional 10 A330-300s, which brings the airline's total order to 25 A330 aircraft. In June 2007, AirAsia X placed a first order to 15 A330s. The agreement was signed by Azran Osman-Rani, AirAsia X Chief Executive Officer and John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. AirAsia X is currently operating its long-haul, low-cost service with leased A330s and these will be joined by the first of the newly ordered aircraft later this year. All the aircraft will be configured to seat 392 passengers in a single class layout. "The A330-300 has proven itself to be a profitable and efficient aircraft. As the world's lowest operating cost per seat aircraft in its segment, these uniquely configured A330-300 aircraft are critical to our mission to liberate long-haul air travel for our customers with unbeatable lowest fares, and bring the world much closer together. Additionally, it will feature various innovative features to provide comfort and entertainment to our guests, and will make our wide-body fleet among the youngest and most modern in the region," said Azran Osman-Rani, Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia X. "The long term confidence of AirAsia X in the long haul, low cost business model is inspirational and we are delighted to see this further endorsed by the A330. The A330-300 remains the most economic means of flying on medium range routes in true long haul comfort. Since first delivery in 1993, total orders for the A330 Family stand at over 900 aircraft, with over 520 currently in service around the world. A380 commercial operations have expanded to Europe, with Singapore Airlines performing its first revenue flight to London's Heathrow Airport. Singapore Airlines has been operating regularly-scheduled service to Sydney using two A380s, and added the U.K. route after recently receiving its third aircraft from Airbus.History was made today with the arrival of the first commercial flight of the world's largest passenger aircraft, the A380, into London's Heathrow Airport. Singapore Airlines' flight SQ308 landed at 2:50 pm local time with a full load of 471 passengers plus crew. This first A380 commercial service to Europe follows the delivery of the third A380 to Singapore Airlines on 11 March. Fitted with luxurious suites, award-winning four-abreast business class and a new, more spacious economy class, the A380 allows the airline's customers to travel to London in unprecedented comfort andspace. Passengers travelling on Singapore Airlines from London to Singapore and on to Sydney will now be able to fly the whole route aboard A380 aircraft. Marvin Tan, Singapore Airlines general manager for the UK and Ireland, said the partnership between SIA and Airbus was making a significant impact on aviation history with the inaugural flight from Singapore to London. "This flight is trailblazing a new era in passenger comfort between Singapore and Europe and the A380 is an aircraft of which both of our companies can be proud. Entry into service has been fantastic and that's down to our close partnership with Airbus," Tan explained Mike Forster, group strategy director for BAA, which operates Heathrow, said the inaugural flight marked a great day for Heathrow, Singapore Airlines and aviation. BAA had invested £450million in readiness for this first flight into Europe's busiest airport. "The A380 is an important aircraft as it allows us to increase capacity without increasing the number of flights," he commented. "Heathrow airlines have placed orders for 168 A380s. This means 10 per cent of our passengers will be flying on A380s, allowing us to increase capacity without increasing the number of flights." The U.K.'s Minister of State for Business, Pat McFadden, added: "This flight represents a significant milestone. The Airbus A380 is a remarkable aircraft - quieter, cleaner, smarter and greener than existing commercial planes. I wish the aircraft, the airport and the airline - all renowned for their world-leading capabilities - a long and successful future working together." Singapore Airlines is the first to fly the A380 and has firm orders for a further 16 aircraft and options on six more.

Airbus corporation promised to hand over the A380 s to Singapore Airlines in year 2006. However , the first hand over ceremony was on 25 October 2007 for Singapore Airlines' first commercial flight to Sydney. Before that, Singapore Airlines was about to sue Airbus because of that reason.

Airbus announced and has confirmed the plans for Airbus A350 Xtra Wide Body. Most probably because of the announcement of Boeing 787 Dreamliner. At first, Boeing created the Boeing 747. ( Boeing 747 is a semi double deck, wide body, 4 engines airliner manufactured by Boeing. It has 18 wheels, it provides seating for 560 people in standard three class configuration ). Then, in the year 2002, Airbus announced its new model ~ the Airbus A380. ( Airbus A380 is a double deck, wide body, 4 engine airliner manufactured by the European corporation ~ Airbus. Airbus A380 made its maiden flight on 27 April 2005, and has made its first commercial flight on 25 October 2007 from Singapore to Sydney, Australia with Singapore Airlines. Airbus A380 provides seating for 525 people in standard three class configuration or up to 853 people in all economy class configuration. Major structural sections of A380 are built in France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Due to their size, they are brought to the assembly hall in Toulouse, France by surface transportation. Early critics claimed that A380 would damage the taxiways and other airport surfaces. However, the pressure exerted by its wheels is lower than the Boeing 747 or Boeing 777 because it has 22 wheels, 4 more than the Boeing 747 and 8 more than the Boeing 777. Now, Airbus COO John Leahy confirmed the plans for an enlarged version ~ Airbus A380-900, which is a slight stretch of A380-800. This version would have a seat capacity of 900 passengers in all economy class configuration. )
